You could call Michael DeSalvo a believer. Three years ago, when the 47-year-old Syracuse native opened a hair salon in a former porn shop, redecorating and attracting customers weren’t his only concerns. The area was swarming with slumlords and drug
dealers, and DeSalvo often had to shoo prostitutes away from his storefront.Michael DeSalvo says prostitutes once loitered outside his salon, Hairanoia.: Photos by Jenna M. McKnight
The Greater Strathmore Neigborhood Association is proud to host the 5th annual Parks Run from Syracuse's historic Onondaga Park. This 4 mile trek will begin and end in the park, while taking you on a visual tour of one of NYS most beautiful family neighborhoods. Enjoy the tremendous views of downtown (and even the windmills of Oneida) from one of the city's highest peaks. The event is open to anyone of any age, and rates are designed for individuals and for entire families- there will be plenty of fun scheduled for non-running participants as well.

America's 6th Most Affordable City to do Business In
Regional Financial Associates developed a metropolitan area cost of doing business index based upon the major costs that vary by area and affect most businesses: Labor, Energy, Tax burdens and Office rents. These four indices are then combined to determine the Cost of Doing Business Index. The top 100 metropolitan areas in America were evaluated. In most cases, data is from 1990-1994.

It’s not scary. It’s not gang-ridden. It’s not “the projects.†In fact, the north side can be a great place to live. Convenient to downtown and the mall, some neighborhoods on the north side border on idyllic. Some of the oldest homes in the city are in north side neighborhoods, and former mansions from Syracuse’s heyday and still tucked between newer homes.
I moved to Eastwood last year from the 'burbs and I just need to tell everyone how cool it is.
First of all, the slogan for our cozy part of the city is "Walkable Eastwood," and it so is! I go for walks at least four times a week and never get tired of the scenery -- cute little houses and families, unique shops and lots of trees. Eastwood is a wonderful neighborhood to stretch your legs.
Have you been to Baldwinsville lately? This town has really come a long way, and I’d highly recommend taking the short drive west on 690 to experience the new B’ville.
The center of B’ville has shops, antique stores, and Mercer Park, which has a free boat launch into the Seneca River. You’ll know you’re in the center of town when you see the brilliant lights along the bridge crossing the Seneca. They seem to add more and more lights to this bridge every time I see it. But I must admit, it’s quite beautiful at night.
