Earlier this month one of the biggest names in classical music took the stage with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Despite only being 27 years old, Hilary Hahn has won a Grammy and had an album debut in the top spot on the Classical Billboard charts. After seeing her perform live, it becomes clear why she is so highly regarded throughout the world.
I was among those fortunate enough to be able to attend her performance on May 5th. The first half of the program was sans Hilary and highlighted the talents of our wonderful SSO. They opened the night with a suite by Prokofiev and a rhapsody by the Romanian composer Enescu. Both pieces demonstrated just how lucky Syracuse is to have a Symphony Orchestra of the caliber of the SSO.
After the intermission the anticipation throughout the Civic Center for Hilary’s performance was like nothing else. As usual, she did not disappoint. Those in attendance were treated to an unforgettable performance of Paganini’s first violin concerto. The beautiful melodious sound emanating from her violin captivated the concert hall in a manner that only a brilliant musician can.
As is usually the case after one of her performances, Hilary made herself available for autographs and to greet her legion of fans personally. The line she attracted extended the length of the theater lobby. I easily waited at least 45 minutes for her to sign my favorite CD of hers, and there were dozens of people behind me in line.
The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra is the 43rd largest in the nation and is renowned for their artistic excellence. While their regular season is wrapping up this week, the Symphony puts on several free concerts throughout the summer. Check back for more information as the summer schedule is released.
